Stockholm – a sustainable host city from arrival to departure

Hosting an international congress in Stockholm means welcoming the world to a city that combines climate responsibility, accessibility and high quality. Here, participants can travel, stay, meet and enjoy in a way that is both comfortable and sustainable – from the first landing to the final departure.

Leaders in climate-smart travel
Stockholm Arlanda Airport is among the leading airports in the world for climate transition. The airport was the first in the world to become carbon neutral in its own operations and is currently certified at level 5, the highest level in Airport Carbon Accreditation. Sweden aims to make domestic flights fossil-free by 2030 and all Swedish aviation by 2045 – a clear signal of leadership in climate transition.

A city built for sustainable mobility

Stockholm has one of the world's most well-developed and climate-smart public transport systems. Since 2017, all public transport has been powered by 100% renewable energy. With over 100 metro stations and short distances between meeting venues, hotels and the city centre, it is easy to travel in a climate-smart way. This facilitates both the congress's climate calculation and the participants' experience of a well-functioning and safe city.

Certified hotels and meeting venues

The majority of Stockholm's hotels and meeting venues are certified by independent sustainability organisations, meaning that the hosting meets international requirements for environmental management, resource efficiency and social responsibility. The city's major meeting venues are also located just ten minutes from the city by public transport – a practical and climate-smart advantage for both organisers and participants.

Some examples: Stockholmsmässan – ISO 20121 and the first in the Nordics to join the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative; Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre – Green Key certified; The Brewery – Nordic Swan Ecolabelled; Kistamässan – certified according to SUSA, Sustainable Venue.

Food with care and responsibility
Stockholm's restaurants and food actors work actively to reduce climate impact through local and organic ingredients, seasonal menus, plant-based alternatives and reduced food waste. There is a strong commitment to creating dining experiences that are both enjoyable and responsible – a reflection of Stockholm's role as a pioneer in sustainable urban development.

A sustainable congress is planned, implemented and followed up on in a way that minimises environmental impact while creating a positive footprint – for the city, society and everyone who participates.
