Record-breaking summer for Stockholm – historically high number of guest nights

Published: 7 januari 2026

The summer of 2025 was historic for the Stockholm region's visitor industry. A total of 5,217,911 guest nights were registered in Stockholm County during June–August – the highest number since the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket) began its measurements in 2008. This represents an increase of 187,650 guest nights compared to the same period last year.

The record-breaking figures are primarily driven by explosive growth in international visitors. Foreign guests increased by a significant 16.9 per cent, accounting for 304,034 more guest nights than in the summer of 2024. This growth rate is more than four times stronger than that of Swedish guests.

In total, international visitors accounted for 2,098,511 guest nights, representing 40.2 per cent of the total volume in the county. Swedish guests increased by 3.4 per cent to 2,990,889 guest nights.

City of Stockholm shows strongest domestic growth

In the City of Stockholm, 3,282,981 guest nights were registered during the summer, an increase of 4.4 per cent. Here, a particularly strong growth was seen among Swedish visitors, who increased by 8.1 per cent to 1,626,183 guest nights. International guests in the city increased by 16.3 per cent to 1,565,385 guest nights.

The city is now nearly back to the levels seen in the record year of 2019, demonstrating a strong and stable recovery since the pandemic.

"These are very encouraging figures with great significance for the entire Stockholm region. International growth has immediate effects for thousands of companies within hotels, restaurants, retail, and culture, and creates new jobs. Many travellers choose Stockholm for the proximity between the city and nature, our strong cultural offering with many events, and the open, welcoming atmosphere," says Staffan Ingvarsson, CEO of Stockholm Business Region.

Strongest international growth in a very long time

The international increase of 16.9 per cent in the county is the strongest growth for foreign guests measured in a very long time. The largest international markets are the USA and Germany, followed by Norway, the UK, and Finland.

July at the top

Of the summer months, July was the strongest, with nearly 1.9 million guest nights in the county and over 1.1 million in the City of Stockholm. June and August also showed strong figures, indicating steady and stable growth throughout the entire summer.

Hotels in focus

Hotel stays account for by far the largest share of guest nights in the Stockholm region. Camping and hostels complement the offering and contribute to the diversity of the visitor industry.
