STHLM M.A.T – Mobilization, Activation, Transformation – for the sustainable food city of the future
STHLM M.A.T is an initiative in which the City of Stockholm wants to join forces with the restaurant industry and take the step from dialogue to concrete action, to together build the sustainable food city of the future.

Through this initiative, we want to understand what hinders and enables good food that is healthy for people and good for the environment and climate to become the standard on Stockholmers' plates, while also creating value for the industry.
We want to move from dialogue to concrete action by jointly developing and testing new solutions – both around the food that is served and around how the city can capture engagement, support innovation, and meet the industry with relevant offerings.
In the autumn of 2026, we will gather insights through interviews and workshops on the industry's drivers, obstacles, and opportunities, in order to present a number of concepts for more sustainable food at the end of the year, based on three shifts: increasing the share of plant-based food, increasing the share of products that are organic, in season, or locally produced, and reducing food waste. In the spring of 2027, a number of pilots will then be launched to test the concepts in real-world conditions, with the aim of stress-testing, evaluating, and drawing conclusions about continued opportunities for collaboration and scaling up.
STHLM M.A.T is part of the global climate network C40's programme Plantiful – in which cities such as Berlin, Amsterdam, and Lisbon will explore how collaboration between cities and businesses can be strengthened for more sustainable food environments.
