Work permits – this applies
For citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA, a work permit is typically required before the individual can commence work in Sweden. Citizens from the EU/EEA and Switzerland do not require a work permit. However, they must register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to obtain a personal identity number. If the period of employment is shorter, a coordination number (samordningsnummer) may be used instead.

As an employer, you are responsible for:
- Offering terms of employment that are at least on par with Swedish collective agreements or established industry standards.
- Arranging necessary insurance coverage, including health, life, occupational injury, and pension insurance.
- Providing a formal job offer, which the candidate must attach to their application to the Swedish Migration Agency.
The application process: step-by-step
- The company initiates the application through the Swedish Migration Agency's web portal.
- The candidate receives a link to complete their portion of the application.
- If your company is certified by the Swedish Migration Agency, the process is expedited, typically taking 1–2 months compared to the standard 4–6 months.
Please note that the work permit must be granted before the individual can travel to Sweden and commence work.
Employment regulations
When international talent begins their role, you must ensure that:
- The work permit is valid for the specific employer and professional role.
- The employment adheres to Swedish labour law, including regulations regarding holiday entitlement, working hours, and termination notice.
- All documentation is in order. Employers are legally required to retain copies of work permits throughout the entire duration of employment.
Residence permits for longer stays
If the employee intends to stay in Sweden for more than three months, a residence permit may be required. The application for a residence permit is normally submitted concurrently with the work permit application.
Residence permits for family members
If the employee is relocating with family, their spouse, partner, and children may also apply for residence permits, often as part of the same process. Family members are typically granted the right to work in Sweden.
